American Fruitwood Sewing Table, Circa 1860
Before textiles became disposable, furniture like this stood at the center of daily life.
This mid-19th century American sewing table, crafted in fruitwood around 1860, was designed to sit beside natural light where garments and household linens were repaired, altered, and cared for. It reflects a period when clothing and textiles were valued possessions and maintaining them was considered both a domestic art and a daily ritual.
The table features a raised tray top designed to prevent tools from sliding during use. A single drawer opens to divided interior compartments for thread, needles, scissors, and sewing implements — the interior wear visible inside the drawer is evidence of genuine use rather than decorative aging. The base is supported by gracefully shaped lyre-form supports joined by a turned stretcher, terminating in curved feet that give the piece both stability and sculptural presence. The proportions are refined and balanced, making it equally suited to a modern interior as a side table beside a chair or sofa, or as a small accent surface in an entry, library, or dressing room.
The fruitwood surface retains its original period finish — nourished with drying oils, protected with hand-applied shellac, and maintained over generations with wax. The result is a warm depth of tone that only time and careful stewardship can produce.
Provenance and Condition
This table was acquired in 1999 through the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show, one of the most rigorously vetted American antiques fairs, where exhibiting dealers are required to guarantee period authenticity. It was purchased for a private client commission; when the client's direction changed, the table was retained by Kearsley and has been in professional storage, properly wrapped, for the past 25 years. It has been shown only occasionally during that time.
The piece appears to be entirely original. It is fully functional, with the drawer operating smoothly and all elements intact. This is exceptional for a piece of this age and speaks directly to the quality of its original construction and the conditions of its storage.
