Before textiles were disposable, furniture like this was part of daily life.

This mid 19th century American sewing work table was acquired through the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show, a vetted show known for early American furniture and decorative arts. Pieces from this category were designed to live beside natural light where garments and linens were maintained rather than replaced.

Crafted in American fruitwood around 1860, the table features a raised tray top that prevented tools from slipping while working. The drawer opens to divided compartments for needles, thread, and scissors. The lyre supports and shaped feet are hand cut, and the surface shows true wear from use rather than decorative distressing.

It now serves beautifully as a bedside table, dressing room piece, or atelier work surface while preserving its original relationship to cloth and craftsmanship.

Finish & Patina
The surface retains its traditional period finish, built in the manner of mid-19th century cabinetmaking. The wood was nourished with natural drying oil and protected with a hand-applied shellac, then gently maintained over generations with wax. This process allows the fruitwood to age beautifully, creating the soft glow and depth of tone that only develops through time and careful stewardship.

Excellent antique condition with age appropriate wear.
